Marie Postma

Marie Safar Postma is Professor of Computational Cognitive Science at Tilburg University and founder of the Academic Collaborative Centre for Resilient Democratic Society (REDES). She combines computational methods from AI and data science with insights from cognitive science to investigate how technology influences cognitive performance and shapes human beliefs and trust. Her current research increasingly applies computational approaches to cognitive security in military and defence contexts. In her lecture, she will focus on the impact of so-called ‘AI Scientist’ systems, which are already capable of taking over the work of entire research teams in various fields.

Meet the Trollbots

What happens when AI is used to make high-stakes decisions? Jurriaan van Diggelen, lead researcher in Human-Machine Teaming at TNO, is investigating how people and AI can work together responsibly and effectively in the fields of defence and security.

During this breakout session, you will discover how AI can assist in assessing information and making decisions, whilst humans retain control. Drawing on his research into military AI, Jurriaan will guide you through questions concerning trust, explainability, human control and ethical boundaries. How do we ensure that we understand AI, and that AI properly understands our intentions and considerations?

Cyber Resilience in Digital Services

Cyber resilience is an important prerequisite for maintaining the trust that customers, employees and society place in digital services every day. Organizations must not only protect themselves against cyberattacks, but also be resilient enough to absorb disruptions and recover quickly.

As Group Information Security Officer at Achmea, Martijn de Laat is responsible for strengthening the organization’s resilience against an increasingly sophisticated cyber threat landscape. During this session, Martijn will provide an insight into the current cyber threat landscape facing Achmea. More importantly: how can organizations build an effective defense against these attacks?

Drawing on practical examples, he will share how Achmea works to strengthen its cyber resilience, the challenges involved, and the lessons that can be valuable for organizations preparing for the digital risks of tomorrow.

When everything else fails

Res-Q Net builds infrastructure-independent emergency communication systems for when disasters take down the grid. Its decentralized, solar-powered ad-hoc mesh network lets emergency teams stay connected without cell towers or internet, even when conventional infrastructure fails completely. Res-Q Net grew out of direct feedback from firefighters who needed a communication system built specifically for crisis response, not adapted from general-purpose technology.

Expect an interactive session on why emergency communication collapses during disasters, and what resilient systems design can do about it.

70 Years AI news reviewed

Journalists have been reporting extensively on AI for the past seventy years. In recent years, in particular, news articles about the technology have become increasingly widespread. Lecturer and researcher Jessy de Cooker (Design in Journalism research group at Fontys Journalism) is examining coverage of AI in Dutch daily newspapers dating back to the 1950s. In this session, he will present the trends, sources and other patterns that have emerged, with a particular focus on AI coverage in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Bruce Mutsvairo is interim dean of Amsterdam University College and Professor of Media, Politics & the Global South at Utrecht University. He will share insights and practical tips on how to consider and incorporate non-Western perspectives and influences when thinking about AI technology.

During the session, Jessy and Bruce will challenge you to move beyond your own perspective and consider AI from different viewpoints.

Potje Buurtpreppen

How do you prepare for an emergency together with your neighbours? Journalist and lecturer-researcher Daphne van Paassen (De Groene Amsterdammer, de Volkskrant and Fontys Journalism) discovered that getting neighbours to talk to each other about emergency preparedness is not as easy as it sounds.

Together with the research group at Fontys Journalism, she developed ‘Potje Buurtpreppen’: a playful and sometimes hilarious game designed to spark conversations about community resilience. During this breakout session, you’ll discover the research behind the game and get the chance to play it yourself.

Wargame

Journalistic wargame

How does an editorial team make sound ethical decisions under pressure? The Fontys Research Group on Design in Journalism, in collaboration with BUas, has developed a journalistic war game that enables editorial teams to test their own decision-making processes and ethical instincts.

During this breakout session, guided by Anne Lisa van Giesen and Nick van Apeldoorn, you will step into the role of an editorial team member. You will be presented with a morally complex dilemma: to publish or not to publish? By thinking aloud, negotiating with others and justifying your choices, you will discover the assumptions and values that underpin journalistic decisions.
